Horror art is often dismissed or misunderstood, pushed to the fringes while more “acceptable” genres take the spotlight. We are seen as the weirdos when all we are doing is looking at the world through a different lens. It's not all blood and guts, but that's what most people seem to latch onto when criticizing horror and dark art. But beyond the noise, there’s a group of artists crafting something far more creative and sinister. They’re world-builders, storytellers, and visionaries who use their skills to unearth our deepest fears and bring them to life.

If you’re tired of the same old horror clichés and want to discover artists who are genuinely redefining the genre, you’re in the right place. I’ve put together a list of some of the most exciting horror artists you need to follow. Whether they’re working with paint, digital tools, pencils, or mixed media, these creatives are summoning nightmares in ways you won’t forget

Stefan Koidl

We need to start this listicle off strong, and there's no better way to do that than to have Stefan Koidl for our first horror artist. You have more than likely seen one of Stefan's dark art creations floating around on the internet. I've seen his work posted many a Facebook group or on an Instagram page uncredited, with thousands of comments and likes. And even though for Stefan, that's probably frustrating, it goes to show the quality and absolute showstopping pedigree of his horror art. Stefen's work blends a dystopian world with the most bonkers and surreal horror that your mind could never come up with. Empty country roads, littered with floating bodies. Beds that attack their hosts. Demons lurking in the most suburban of corners. And the odd fantasy horror that even Sauren would be caught wincing at. It's artists like Stefan, with their immense work rate and limitless imagination, that make us mere mortal horror artists feel lazy. Check out his work HERE

John Kenn Mortensen

Following closely on from Stefan, biro pen and Post-it note pad in hand is John Kenn Mortensen. Another of those artists whose work you have seen everywhere but are not quite sure whose art it is. John scribbles the most insane and messed-up horror art onto Post-it notes. His monsters look like cute cartoons, but on closer inspection, they may just traumatise you for life. With themes of childhood, loneliness, and death, they are like the Grimm fairytales on steroids. If youre feeling brave, these could be a good way of weaning your children onto the dark side....either that or cause them lifelong kindertrauma. Either way, it's a win-win. Check out John Kenn Mortensen's work HERE.

Gary Pullin

Gary Pullin is the first artist on our list who focuses mostly on horror movie art. And if youre reading this, im pretty sure you probably love horror movies. Gary's horror art stands out amongst his peers for his bold colors and striking detail. It's the finest blend of 80s VHS cover art with a modern graphic sensibility. For the best example, check out his covers for Friday the 13th. In one huge swing, he gives us horror lovers some of the most striking Jason art that ive seen grace a Blu-ray! It slaps you in the face and screams at your children 'WATCH ME!!!'. You can find Gary's work all over the interwebs, on Blu-ray stands, and in magazines! If you haven't already, check his work out HERE!!

Shindy Designs

Shindy Designs from the UK is a triple threat in the world of horror and dark art. Not only does he create some of the most insanely detailed horror movie art, original music album art, but he's also a tattooist! Come on, buddy, at least leave some talent to go around the rest of us! Shindy's art is the kind of art you have to sit with for way longer, so you can really delve into the hyper detail and the craziness that ensues in his art. It's like adhd, black metal, and Terrifier had a bastard child, and that child is Shindy's art. If you want to have your mind blown that check Shindys Horror art HERE!!

Matt Stikker (Bargainblasphemy)

Speaking of insane detail! I introduce to you, the insane and bonkers art of Matt Stikker, also known as Bargain Blashphemy! Whose striking, yet horrifying, black and white ink work looks like it was created by Gustave Doré, after a bag full of LSD and cocaine! To appreciate the detail, you need to zoom right in, but that's also an issue, as most of Matt's horror art is absolutely gruesome, with people being torn apart by unknown hands, or horrid creatures oozing with blood and slime! If you want nightmares for the next month, then check out Matt's work HERE!!

Godmachine

If you like dark art, and you don't know the name Godmachine, you must have been living down a dark, damp cellar for the past 10 years! God machine puts the goth into dark art! His images are adorned with skulls, black and striking colours. The surreal worlds and comicbook-like aesthetic showcase a body of work that feels like it is from the most exciting graphic novel never created! From horror movie originals to homages of H.P. Lovecraft, Godmachine has you covered. Take it from someone who has a limited-run Godmachine print hanging in his kitchen. To see for yourself, check out Godmachine's Horror art HERE!!

Zack Dunn

Get ready for our first traditional painter on this list. And what a pleasure it is to feature the beautiful, surreal, and downright freaky horror art of Zack Dunn. Take your most horrific nightmare, turn the vibrance up to 11, and then get ready for your eyes to explode. Zack's creations bleed out from the canvas and down the frame. Creating some of the most sought-after dark art that you could have hanging in your home. Check out Zack's social media where he posts process videos of him varnishing his paintings, something you need to see as it brings his paintings to life and is, for some reason, very satisfying to watch. Check out Zacks' art HERE!

Danny Ingrassia

Danny Ingrassia is another one of those horror artists whose work you have seen many times on the internet somewhere, but never knew whose art it is. His signature images are usually low-key, dark art full of creepy, terrifying evils, with their mouths torn wide open! His use of dark darks and minimal light sources creates a striking aesthetic that sticks with you long after you stop looking. But Danny isn't a one-trick pony, his portfolio is full of dark fantasy, surreal everyday scenes with hidden terrors, and some really cool horror movie homages. Definitely go check out his work HERE!!

Richard Luong (tentaclesandteeth)

Richard Luong is probably one of the most diverse artists on this list. He dabbles in creature design, illustration, and sketches for not only comics and film, but also creates art for Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons. His Horror art is top tier, especially his creature design and dark art scenes that take homage from some of his favorite movies. He is heavily influenced by horror, and it shows. And bonus, you also get kick-ass Marvel concept art at the same time. Check out his work HERE!!

Matt Barnes

Last but definitely not least is the horror art of Matt Barnes. Matt is a cover artist who specializes in horror, he's also a friend of mine who I have seen go from strength to strength and become one of the best cover artists in the world. Matt sublime use of colour and composition seperates him from the cover art chaff and AI generated wank that you find online these days. If you took Dario Argento's bold aesthetic, mixed it with some Fulci, and threw a dash of HP Lovecraft into a blender, Matt's horror art would spew forth! Matt is currently taking commissions, go check his work out HERE!!

That's all, folks!

And that's the end of my fancy list. Please take your time, and vist each artist's website and I'm sure you'll have enough terror and inspiration there to last a good few months! But if you need more horror art, feel free to check out my own Horror Photography and Dark Art work HERE!!

Signing off, Stay Creepy!
